Starting Guide

Hey! If you’re just dipping your toes into AI art (or coming back after a break in 2026), welcome. This quick guide is your map - no deep dives yet, just the big picture so you know where everything fits.

The modern AI art pipeline is basically: Idea -> Prompt/Control -> Generate -> Refine -> Output (2D sprite, 3D asset, concept art, etc.). You can start super simple (cloud tools like Midjourney) and level up to full local control (ComfyUI).

The Basic Pipeline Flow

  1. Ideation - Brainstorm what you want (character, scene, style). Use real sketches, mood boards, or even AI to spark ideas.
  2. Prompting & Control - Write descriptive text + use tools like ControlNet for poses, depth, etc.
  3. Generation - Run through a model (checkpoint) to create the image.
  4. Refinement - Upscale, fix hands/faces, add details via img2img, or pipe to 3D tools.
  5. Output - Save, post-process in Photoshop/Krita/Blender, export for games/site/blog.

Pro move: Document every step in Obsidian/Markdown so you can recreate wins later.

Free vs Paid Tools in 2026

You don’t need to spend a fortune to make great stuff - especially with local options.

Free / Low-Cost Starters

  • Leonardo.ai - Still one of the best free tiers (150 daily tokens ~30 high-quality images/day, public gens). Great for photoreal/anime, Flux models, easy web interface.
  • Google ImageFX / Imagen 3 - Generous daily limits, photoreal strength, no signup hassle.
  • Stable Diffusion + ComfyUI (local) - Completely free/unlimited once installed. Runs on your GPU. Download models from Civitai/Hugging Face.
  • Other free-ish: Ideogram (limited daily), Playground AI, self-hosted Flux/SDXL.
  • Midjourney - Cloud-based, Discord/web, amazing coherence. Plans (as of March 2026):
    • Basic: $10/mo (~200 fast images, no unlimited relax).
    • Standard: $30/mo (15 fast GPU hours, unlimited relax).
    • Pro: $60/mo (30 hours, stealth mode for private gens).
    • Mega: $120/mo (60 hours, max concurrency). Great for quick ideation, but outputs are public unless Pro+.

My take: Start free with ComfyUI install. If you love cloud speed, grab Midjourney Basic for a month to test!

Mindset Tips for Beginners (Don’t Burn Out!)

AI art is addictive but frustrating at first - here are some tips to keeping your sanity:

  • Experiment fast, fail cheap - Generate tons of junk. Every bad image teaches you something (prompts, samplers, etc.).
  • Master fundamentals first - Learn composition, lighting, anatomy basics. AI is a tool - good art sense makes it 10x better.
  • Iterate, don’t chase perfection - Use img2img to refine instead of starting over. Save seeds/prompts that work.
  • Community > solo - Join r/StableDiffusion, Civitai comments, ComfyUI Discord. Share WIPs - feedback accelerates learning.
  • Take breaks - AI can feel like a slot machine. Step away, sketch traditionally, or just vibe. Burnout kills creativity.
  • Document everything - Prompt, settings, model version, why it worked/failed. Turn your notes into reusable guides.

You’re not “cheating” with AI - you’re using a new medium. Focus on the story/emotion you want to convey, and the tech will catch up.

Next up: Pick Midjourney Setup or ComfyUI Setup to get generating right away.
